Combustion Engineering Training Program

The science of combustion, as complex as it is, can be summed up simply; it’s the process by which fuel is turned into energy through a heating process. Combustion Engineering concerns the science of combustion as it applies to industry. Most energy consumed today is derived from fossil fuels, but the world’s dependence on oil and coal cannot continue indefinitely. Our reliance on these fuels will need to be supplemented with other forms of energy, whether nuclear or a yet undiscovered source.

Combustion Engineering may very well be at the forefront of developing new technologies in fuel consumption. As the global need for energy efficiency intensifies and the search for new, environmentally sustainable fuels increases, the need for combustion engineers will expand. Energy will remain a huge industry where skill and innovation will be in high demand. Individuals with understanding and trained in Combustion Engineering will be responsible for planning and implementing new combustion systems and equipment.

Combustion Engineering Training Program Objective

On completion of the training, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain the basic concepts of combustion chemistry, the thermodynamic reasons that make a combustion reaction possible, and the factors that affect the reaction rate.
  2. Distinguish different types of flames from their morphology, and explain how different combustion mechanisms are related to macroscopic qualitative features
  3. Explain the ignition mechanism, and construct simple mathematical models to capture the main features of spontaneous and forced ignition.
  4. Describe the features of flame propagation, estimate the flame velocity and thickness through simple calculations, explain the conditions that determine flame extinction.
  5. Describe the properties of different fuels, and choose the appropriate technologies to use them.
